ONE CUBE, ONE REFLECTION
The façade lighting concept for the Kehui building is inspired by the architecture’s original concept by GMP. Kehui was first proposed as a lower building in the shape of a cube until the client chose to increase its investment by doubling the building height. GMP tackled the change of design brief by simply duplicating the Cube concept vertically. Studio Illumine viewed this unusual exercise not as duplication but rather as a reflection of the original Cube concept, in other words, the lower section representing the object of focus and the upper section as its reflection. In practice, this meant that the lit effect would therefore focus on the original cube, which in turn would function as a master, with its lit effect being reflected towards the upper section of the building. The landscape lighting would continue to reinforce the Cube concept by highlighting the architectural features through lit effects in the surrounding areas. Philip Rafael was the lead designer and managed this project as part of his work as Associate Director at Studio Illumine.
